VFS Digital Design is a highly multicultural program. We get students from all over the world. Being Chinese, I’m very interested in the educational experiences of our students from Mainland China, Taiwan, & Hongkong. I started meeting with them to capture and share their insights. As part of my ongoing series of interviews, Digital Design student, Owen Chen, talks about his experience.
Maggie Guo: Welcome Owen. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Owen Chen: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I’m originally from Beijing, China. I came to Vancouver at the age of 11. And I got my Bachelor Degree in Design and Marketing after high school. Now, I’m a student in Digital Design Class 22. I’m very happy to be here enjoying the interesting courses. Oh, by the way, I was born in the Year of the Dragon, so this is my fate year!

MG: What was your decision-making process in selecting the Digital Design program?
OC: When I was in the the process of earning my Bachelor Degree, I participated in a competition/exhibition called the Salazar Awards. At the show, we saw the awards that VFS Digital Design students had won and their tremendous projects. From that time, I began to pay attention to the school. When I decided to continue my studies, I compared VFS with BCIT, but the curriculum and the Digital Design projects attracted me more. After learning more about the school, I discovered that VFS grads are very popular in the industry and their work has a big impact. So I contacted an advisor. At first, I considered both the Digital Design and Film programs. After talking with my advisor, he suggested that Digital Design was more related to my Bachelor Degree and general background, and it seemed like a good fit.

MG: What has your experience been like so far in the program?
OC: What I’ve learned in Digital Design is very practical. Here, they not only help you with generating inspiring concepts, but they also teach you the whole process of how to visualize your ideas. While, in my former college, many of the instructors were older and not that up-to-date in the industry, in Digital Design, the instructors are all working design professionals who have their own design projects on the go in parallel to teaching. So the instructors can help us keep up with the developments of the industry and cultivate our evolving views about various design fields.
MG: If you could sum up the program in one word, what would it be?
OC: I think for me it would be “interesting”. And I really enjoy being here.

MG: Please tell us about which classes and projects you find most exciting.
OC: I am pretty interested in the design project “Motto” created by Digital Design student, Scott Strathern, and shown by instructor Robin Mitchell-Cranfield at a recent Digital Design Talks event (a recurring guest speaker series). It’ so amazing to see interactive projects on the iPad! I think that will be the direction of my own graduate project.

MG: What advice do you have for students who are thinking of taking the VFS Digital Design program?
OC: I have some friends from China who came to Vancouver and now live in Richmond. They told me they could almost speak Mandarin everywhere in Richmond and seldom need to speak English. It’s great that people from China can tap into our own culture, but I think you can learn more if you’re more involved in the local culture and speak English more frequently.
