Being Chinese, I’m very interested in the educational experiences of our students from Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hongkong. I started meeting with them to capture and share their insights. As part of my ongoing series of interviews, recent Digital Design alumnus, Michael Meng, talks about his experience.

Maggie Guo: Welcome Michael. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

郭春宁: 欢迎你,孟李乐。你能先简单介绍一下你自己吗?

Michael Meng: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I’m a communication designer and digital media innovator currently living in Vancouver. Over the past five years, I’ve been involved with digital media arts as a student, and enjoy every minute of it. I have a passion for digital media of all kinds. With the experience I have gained while studying aboard, I have been developing my understanding of the North American market and consumer. My greatest desire is to create innovative work and develop ideas and visual solutions that cross cultural boundaries.

孟李乐:我是数字媒体和视觉传达设计师,现居住在加拿大温哥华。在过去的五年里,我一直攻读媒体相关的艺 术和设计课程,我很享受学习的这个过程。我对数字媒体相关的 各领域都很有兴趣。通过海外的学习经历,我 了解了北美地区市场运作 的模式,同时也对客户在设计要求等方面有了一番自己的理解。我渴望在设计中能够 不断创新,将理念借助视觉语言进行传达,并希望我 的设计能超越地域与文化。

Maggie Guo: Welcome Rui. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

郭春宁:钱锐,你好!可否先简单介绍一下你自己?

Rui Qian: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I am an enthusiastic interactive designer originally from China. I love to work on beautiful visual stuff, regardless of the medium. After I immigrated to Canada, I worked as a production designer within the Trader Corporation’s online production team. The Trader Corporation is a Canadian leader in print and online vertical media, which allowed me to channel my skills into all types of design work, such as web design, flash animation and communication design, while adding personal value to the team. Later, I had the opportunity to work at Electronic Arts. Working as a technical artist for EA, I applied my flash animation skills to video game design. EA’s supportive work environment and culture gave me the chance to work with other creative people and participate in various design technique workshop. Those experiences had a big impact in helping me pursue my career goals by attending the Digital Design program to enhance my 3D, motion and UX skills.

钱锐: 春宁,你好!谢谢你的采访。我来自中国,是对互动设计充满热情的设计师。我喜欢不局限于任何媒介、 创作美好的视觉作品。我移民加拿大之后,曾经在Trader Corporation担任设计师,这是一家加拿大领先的印刷 和在线公司。在这里,我有机会接触到设计的各个领域:网页设计、flash动画和传达设计等,并在团队中发挥了 我的价值。此后,我有机会加入 Electronic Arts,将技术与艺术相融合,把我的flash动画优势发挥到游戏设计 中。EA的工作环境和文化氛围使我有机会与创意人员一起工作并参与很多设计和技术的工作坊。这些工作经历 激发了我的专业愿景,因此我选择到温哥华电影学院的数字媒体专业(Digital Design)进一步提高3D、动态影 像和用户体验的能力。

Maggie Guo: Welcome Benson. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

郭春宁: 裕民,你好!可否先简单介绍一下你自己?

Benson Chang: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I originally come from Taiwan, and am currently living in Vancouver. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, and I recently graduated from VFS Digital Design Class 20. I have always been excited about branding. It sets the tone and personality that applies to other design components like interactive, which is my second love. When I come up with the ‘Big Idea’, I always treat the project like a real person, asking myself what their lifestyle is. What kind of product they would use? I love challenges, problem solving and generating conceptual ideas, from the design process to final visualization. I also enjoy drawing and illustration. Oh, and I love cooking!

张裕民: 春宁,你好! 谢谢你的采访。我来自台湾,现居温哥华。我的本科专业是视觉传达,我刚从温哥华电影 学院的数字媒体专业毕业, 是数字媒体专业20班的毕业生。我的专业兴趣所在是品牌设计,我对互动设计也很感 兴趣,我希望把品牌设计和互动设计结合起来。每当我进行项目设计的时候, 我总希望把它设想成一个人,问 我自己他的生活方式是怎么样的,他会用什么样的产品?我喜欢迎接挑战,也喜欢通过构思、设计和最终展示来 解决设计问题。我也很喜 欢绘画和插图。对了,我做菜也不错哦!

Yuan You: Hi Maggie, thank you for chatting with me. After I graduated from Digital Design, I joined Tribal DDB in Vancouver as an Interactive Designer, and now I’m back in China, working in the Chengdu, SiChuang province. I currently do brand development for the Luodai Center for Protection and Development of Folk Art.

郭春宁: 一哲,你好!能先向大家简单介绍一下你自己吗?

Owen Chen: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I’m originally from Beijing, China. I came to Vancouver at the age of 11. And I got my Bachelor Degree in Design and Marketing after high school. Now, I’m a student in Digital Design Class 22. I’m very happy to be here enjoying the interesting courses. Oh, by the way, I was born in the Year of the Dragon, so this is my fate year!

Lina Zhao: Hi Maggie, thank you for chatting with me. I originally came from Jiang Xi Province of China. Then I immigrated to Canada. Before studying at VFS Digital Design, I got my Bachelor Degree of Marketing. Now, I’m a student in Digital Design Class 21 and I’m very excited about my courses, especially Branding.

Jeff Chen: Hi Maggie, thank you for chatting with me. I was born and raised in Taiwan. When I was 14, I moved to America. Then I left the United Stated and came to Canada. I spent my high school time in Ottawa. Now I’m a student in Digital Design Class 22. I love art and design.

Maggie Guo: Welcome Teresa. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

郭春宁: 你好!庭昀,能先向大家简单介绍一下你自己吗?

Teresa Chang: Hi Maggie. Thanks for chatting with me. I was born and raised in Taiwan. When I was 11, I moved to Canada. I graduated from Digital Design program in August 2011. Now, I’m a designer focusing on branding and interaction design. I am interested in fashion and making things beautiful and accessible. Prior to coming to VFS, I studied fine art and interior design which continually influence my design practice. I was fortunate enough to work at Blast Radius right after graduating from Digital Design, and my recent work with them includes Starbucks Fall 2011 for Mobile, Starbucks 2011 Holiday campaign, as well as Create Jobs for USA.

張庭昀: 大家好!我生在台湾,在11岁时来到加拿大。我是数字媒体的19届毕业生。我专注于品牌和交互设计。 我感兴趣一切时尚和优美的设计。我的设计受益于我的艺术和室内设计教育背景。我很有幸能在从数字媒体毕业 后前往Blast Radius工作。我最近的作品包括2011年星巴克秋季收集活动推广,2011年星巴克假日活动设计以及Create Jobs for USA。

Hello Vancouver! Hello VFS Digital Design!

The VFS Digital Design Campus

After an eleven-hour flight originating from Beijing, I arrived in Vancouver on September 17th. My first impression was, ‘Wow, Vancouver is a little colder than I thought it would be!’ I was fortunate enough to set up a homestay, and Marilyn, the home owner, kindly picked me up at the airport. After driving 30 minutes, we arrived at my new digs in North Vancouver!

Marilyn showed me around the house and my new room, which is great. And then she served a wonderful dinner — honey garlic pork and rice. She’s a great cook and I’ve really been enjoying North American cuisine. The jet lag suddenly caught up with me so I hit the sack for a well-deserved night of sleep.
